i wish i were dead
i wish i were dead is the debut studio album from Duo Étrange, recorded with ATMA Classique (Anne-Marie Sylvestre, sound engineer). Featuring compositions from seven living composers, the album includes four works written expressly for the ensemble with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and Salle Bourgie. Joanne Kang (piano) and Airat Ichmouratov (violin) join on this recording, featuring a mix of voice-cello exclusive works and chamber works for mixed ensemble. Hailed as "redefining vocal chamber music," this young, innovative, and audacious ensemble celebrates all that is alive within classical music today. The album showcases the remarkable range and artistry of Sahara von Hattenberger (cello) and Vanessa Croome (soprano), while highlighting the ensemble's commitment to both technical excellence and artistic exploration.

Very Feral Today
Very Feral Today is a staged concert work for voice, cello, and pre-recorded text that investigates the act of listening, the intimacy of live performance, and the tension between personal narrative and musical abstraction. Developed collaboratively by director Marcus Shields, Duo Étrange (Sahara von Hattenberger, cello; Vanessa Croome, voice), and designer Frank Oliva, the piece blends recital and performance art, constructing an experience that invites the audience to forgo text and musical narrative and rather use the personal lives and revelations of the performers as the primary dramatic context.
